See a Spout? Watch Out! offers course options for Spout Spotters, Boater Safety Around Whales for boaters in the New England and Mid-Atlantic, Hawaiʻi, and the West Coast. In the New England & Mid-Atlantic
Become familiar with vessel operating practices that can help you have the best experience viewing whales and other marine life that inhabit the nutrient-rich waters of New England and the Mid-Atlantic. The course is targeted for recreational boaters from Maine to Virginia.
The course is made possible by NOAA’s Greater Atlantic Region, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
In Hawai’i
Understand your kuleana (responsibility) to view whales and other marine wildlife in a respectful manner. Become familiar with federal regulations and guidelines that help ensure whales experience minimal disturbance while in their mating and birthing grounds. The course is targeted for on-water users, including paddlers and motor vessel operators throughout Hawaiian waters.
The course is made possible by NOAA Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.
On the West Coast
The five national marine sanctuaries along California’s striking coastline are home to many renowned ecosystems and marine species, especially whales and other marine mammals. Whether you’re a recreational boater, sailor or ocean paddler this course can assist you in understanding the guidelines to keep you and the whales safe, all while learning about our incredible marine mammals that make these sanctuaries distinguished whale watching destinations.
To promote safe viewing, the national marine sanctuaries along the California coast have partnered with The Marine Mammal Center and the Santa Barbara Whale Heritage Area to adapt the “See a Spout” program for the Northeastern Pacific.
